Sports are a huge part of United Stated culture. Kids look up to athletes in sports like baseball, basketball, hockey and football, but all of those are televised and mostly cater to men’s sports. The praising of men’s sports and the lack of media coverage on women’s sports help create a lop-sided social standard for girls. It is as if media is sending a message that little girls should not play sports or dream of being a super star in an activity they love to do, just like millions of professional men have already done.
Sports, no matter what gender, provide important lessons for boys and girls alike and should be considered equal. Team sports promote better communication skills, team work, and keep kids from doing things they should not be doing. Even non team sports help benefit by providing discipline and show that working hard at something can pay off.
There is no doubt that in the past few years there have been plenty of women praised for their skill. Women like beach volleyball players Misty May Treanor and Kerri Walsh or US women’s soccer team goalie Hope Solo. It is great that these women are recognized in their sports but this was only during the WORLD Olympics and the WORLD cup, not during every day life on our domestic women’s sports teams.
It is our hope that if people could be more educated about women’s sports they can understand why they are so important to our society and should get just as much coverage and praise as men’s sports do.
